In the grand scheme of things, Black Widow isn’t a household name like Iron Man, Captain America or Thor. But Scarlett Johansson certainly has name recognition (and facial recognition), so it’s no real surprise that Marvel Studios is rolling out a character featurette with The Avengers on the horizon to alert audiences – primarily female ticket buyers – that there’s a lady hero they can get behind in this potentially-testosterone-laden blockbuster. This new Black Widow clip comes to us exclusively from E! Online. Click here to view it on their Web page (it auto-plays, annoyingly).

Most of the film footage in the featurette has popped up in TV spots and trailers. But we also get fresh insight from Johansson as well as her Iron Man 2 co-star Robert Downey Jr. That’s right, Widow first appeared as a supporting player in Jon Favreau’s second Iron Man film, though it always was the intention to elevate her to a team player in Joss Whedon’s The Avengers. From the looks of it, she helps S.H.I.E.L.D. agent Coulson (Clark Gregg) and director Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) recruit the team.

Again, this clip basically exists to let people know that ScarJo has a meaty part in The Avengers, and that it’s not the sausage factory non-geeks might be fearing.The Avengers will dominate the movie-going universe on May 4.
