Queen Elsa has made her appearance on “Once Upon A Time”

This Sunday ABC aired it’s two hour season finale of Once Upon a Time. As tradition goes the show has ended the season with a hook, introducing a new character, maybe even a possible villain. Who is this character? Why, it’s none other than Elsa from the Oscar-winning animated film ‘Frozen’.

Season 3 on Once Upon a Time has gone from Neverland, to Oz and to the Enchanted Forest brining in characters like an evil Peter Pan and the Wicked Witch of the West. While the season as a whole, especially the Neverland arc, was a bit lackluster, the progression of the season built to a very wonderful Season Finale introducing Queen Elsa for the next season.

The Hollywood Reporter had a chance to sit down with Once Upon a Time Showrunners Eddy Kitsis and Adam Horowitz about the big reveal telling them that the idea to bring Elsa into the show was brought up shortly after the movie’s release. However, even though Disney owns ABC, the pair did reveal that they had to ask for permission to incorporate her stating:

“It’s actually quite hard to get these characters on the show.”

-Eddy Kitsis to THR

‘Frozen’ is based on Hans Christian Andersen‘s fairy tale the The Snow Queen who was not a villain, but a very lonely woman who sought out companionship. Much like with Frozen, she was a very misunderstood character who has the power to bring winter wherever she goes. With that in mind, Kitsis had this to say on the character and why he feels her addition into the show is essential:

What we loved so much about the character of Elsa was that she was considered a villain but she never really really was. She was misunderstood. That, on our show, speaks to us so strongly, that it was a toy we had to play with.”

-Eddy Kitsis to THR

Elsa really is a strong character, as is her sister Anna, and the fact that they save each other, that twist in the story and the production of the movie is what made it so captivating, even more so than the music. Elsa offers so fun for fans to enjoy, bringing in a truly conflicted character who apparently was locked up by Rumplestilskin.

No casting choices on who will be playing Elsa have been made yet, but overall, as a fan of the show, I am glad that it is returning to it’s Fairy Tale roots. I’m just super excited for Season 4 at this point.
