Weekly Reading List #16

By: Cynthia Ayala

Hey there avid readers—or who I hope are avid readers. I hope everyone is having a much better week than I am having. I was terribly sick last week and earlier this week and I seem to be getting much better now. Other than the usual financial struggles I am facing with attending school, affording my rent and paying my bills, I seem to be in good spirits, can’t let the world weigh me down, that’s what I have to say about that. However, you aren’t hear to read about my problems, you’re here to see what I’m reading soon. So here we go! Oh and all synopsis are the courtesy of Goodreads.com.

Happy reading!

1. Scattered Suns (The Saga of Seven Suns #4)

    By Kevin J. Anderson

I love this series so much and when I was at school this past Spring (although considering how much snow there was sure didn’t feel like Spring) I went ahead and bought every single book in the series. The last book left off on quite the cliffhanger so I’m excited to see where this book is going to take readers as far as the war with the super-powered aliens goes. Characterization has always been spot on and despite the fact that there is so much going on, it’s still very easy to follow. I can’t wait to get to this novel.

“The fourth novel in the Saga of Seven Suns series executes a plan that has been long in the making. The final, most powerful enemy against the humans is about to be launched; how will they survive?

The war between the alien hydrogues and the faeros rages, reducing suns to blackened shells–including one of the fabled seven suns of the Ildiran Empire. The Ildirans are engaged in a bloody civil war and are bitterly divided. Can they overcome their internal fighting to face a deadly new enemy?”

2. A Magic Dark and Bright (The Asylum Saga, #1)

    By Jenny Adams Perinovic

I was lucky enough to win this novel via a Goodreads Giveaway and the synopsis just makes me eager to read it even more. The cover is so simple but it looks like so much is going on in the synopsis. I’m excited to read this novel.

“She meant to help a ghost…not unleash a curse.

Amelia Dupree hasn’t seen the Woman in White since the night her brother died.

The ghost seems to have disappeared from the woods surrounding Asylum, Pennsylvania—that is, until Charlie Blue moves into the creepy old MacAllister House next door. Amelia can’t help liking him, even though she spent her childhood thinking his grandmother was a witch. And she definitely can’t ignore the connection between his arrival and the Woman in White’s return.

Then Amelia learns that the Woman in White is a prisoner, trapped between the worlds of the living and the dead. Devastated by the idea that her brother could be suffering a similar fate, Amelia decides to do whatever it takes to help the Woman in White find peace–and Charlie agrees to help her.

But when Amelia’s classmates start to drown in the Susquehanna River, one right after another, rumors swirl as people begin to connect the timing of Charlie’s arrival with the unexplained deaths. As Charlie and Amelia uncover the dark history of Asylum, they realize they may have unleashed an unspeakable evil. One they have to stop before everything they love is destroyed.”

3. The House of Shattered Wings

By Aliette de Bodard

Another novel that I was able to get my hands on. This novel I won via Penguin’s First to Read program, a program that I recommend to everyone who loves to read. Reading this fuller synopsis I am even more intrigued than I already was. Hope it’s as good as it sounds.

“Multi-award winning author Aliette de Bodard, brings her story of the War in Heaven to Paris, igniting the City of Light in a fantasy of divine power and deep conspiracy…

In the late Twentieth Century, the streets of Paris are lined with haunted ruins. The Great Magicians’ War left a trail of devastation in its wake. The Grand Magasins have been reduced to piles of debris, Notre-Dame is a burnt-out shell, and the Seine has turned black with ashes and rubble and the remnants of the spells that tore the city apart. But those that survived still retain their irrepressible appetite for novelty and distraction, and The Great Houses still vie for dominion over France’s once grand capital.

Once the most powerful and formidable, House Silverspires now lies in disarray. Its magic is ailing; its founder, Morningstar, has been missing for decades; and now something from the shadows stalks its people inside their very own walls.

Within the House, three very different people must come together: a naive but powerful Fallen angel; an alchemist with a self-destructive addiction; and a resentful young man wielding spells of unknown origin. They may be Silverspires’ salvation—or the architects of its last, irreversible fall. And if Silverspires falls, so may the city itself.”
