Published by Movement Publishing Mage: The Guardian’s Oath by S.A. Edwards is the first in her YA fantasy series, The Nephilium Lands.

The Guardians Oath is the first in a new series by SA Edwards, and what a start it is. The first-person narrative puts the reader in the mindset of not only the character but also the world being built here. As a fantasy novel, first-person narratives can falter just a bit, but Edwards pulls it off effortlessly. The magic in the world, the universe in this novel, it works in tandem with the POV because it’s able to grab at the reader and lure them into the story with ease.

There’s so much going on, but the pace, it keeps the reader sucked into the adventure precisely because of the POV and because of the adventure. It makes so an easy read because it moves at an effortless pace. It doesn’t drag or falter, it keeps up the energy that resides inside of Clara and uses that energy to spark an amazing coming-of-age adventure.

Now, there’s something to be said about Clara. She’s a bright character, fierce and strong. So much has happened to her and yet the light within her, it doesn’t break or falter. Clara is not only faced with so many choices, but a darkness within her that threatens to consume her if she doesn’t learn control her magic and her powers. It is an invigorating way to build the character development and challenge the character and build off the plot of the story that is all about light versus darkness and the balance in between. Not only that, the other characters offer up a story full of diversity. This lends itself to building up the tension with the same energy that sparks the novel.

Overall, Mage: The Guardian’s Oath is an exciting new novel.
