Action Packed and Bundles of Laughs | Review of ‘Spy’

By: Cynthia Ayala

Spy starring Melissa McCarthy, Jason Statham, Rose Byrne & Jude Law
20th Century Fox

The CIA has been hacked and all their secrets agents’ identities have been compromised. And with a nuclear bomb ready for sale on the black market, the CIA has to come up with a plan to find the bomb and get it out the bad guys hands. So they send in one of their top CIA computer technicians from the basement to do the job. The question is can Susan Cooper handle the job?

Spy is the new action comedy starring Melissa McCarthy as Susan Coper, the voice in the head of the spy, the person who guides them and keeps them alive and safe. She stars alongside Jude Law, Rose Byrne and Jason Statham, as the would-be spy who is trying to save the world as she goes undercover to save the world.

McCarthy brings forth bundles of laughs in the big screen with this film alongside loads of action to this spy feature. The humor and suspense work well together in this film and they make for an interesting film.

This is a very solid story, one that introduces both humor and seriousness in the very beginning and while the tension rises, the film remains constantly funny. This was a perfect story, constructed effortlessly. The film circles back to the beginning, tying up the story in a neat little bow. It is easy to follow and the events, the secret identities, all of it put together just continued to build the laughs.

One of the more surprising parts of this film was Jason Statham only because seeing this well-known tough guy action star be this ridiculous and over-the-top CIA agent. He was so funny, just funny and seeing him somewhat out of his element was great. Sure, there was humor in the expendables franchise, but nothing like this that has more serious, more nostalgic humor than just plain comedy. This was comedy, and at its finest too.

Building a story like this with all the elements in perfect cohesion with one another takes some brilliant writing and acting, both of which this film has. There is no other way to describe this film other than brilliant just because of how humorous it was. Listen to everyone else who has said exactly what I have said here: this was a hilarious and great film. (★★★ ½
