You know, I went into seeing this film knowing all the bad reviews that others had given it and I can 100% say this: they are wrong.

Suspenseful & Thrilling | Review of ‘Life’ (2017 Film)

By Cynthia Ayala

Life starring Jake Gyllenhaal, Rebecca Ferguson, Ryan Reynolds, Hiroyuki Sanada, Ariyon Bakare & Olga Dihovichnaya
Columbia Pictures

“A team of scientists aboard the International Space Station discover a rapidly evolving life form, that caused extinction on Mars, and now threatens the crew and all life on Earth.”

—IMDB

The alien in space movie is not new, many are failures, but others have become staples of the genre. Life is part of the latter. The premise of the film is about a team of scientists who have discovered life on Mars. At first, the creature is docile, but when provoked, the alien has entered monster territory, if only for its desire to survive. The problem is it doesn’t know when to stop feeding, creating a being that is incredibly dangerous. What makes it even more dangerous is how smart it is. It evolves, and with its evolution, it grows bigger. It’s a sinister being and the writers knew how to develop the creature, its needs and everything that made it dangerous.

A Good Old Western | Review of ‘The Magnificent Seven’ (2016)

The Magnificent Seven starring Denzel Washington, Chris Pratt, Haley Bennet and Byung-hun Lee

“Seven gun men in the old west gradually come together to help a poor village against savage thieves.”

    —IMDB

Who doesn’t like a good western film with solid characters? This film brings to life another adaptation of the Seven Samurai giving it a nice feel of the characters and the setting. The conflict is established very early on giving the film a cohesive feeling overall. There is some hint that Chisolm (played by Denzel Washington) has more in mind of helping out these people than he lets on. What’s good about that is the fact that it’s not overtly obvious about what is going on with him. Instead, there is an openness about it that it can go either way, but the viewer doesn’t know until the end. It’s good storytelling because it doesn’t distract from the story as a whole, it adds to it. Continue reading “A Good Old Western | Review of ‘The Magnificent Seven’ (2016)”

A Fun Solid Animated Feature | Review of ‘The Angry Birds Movie’

By Cynthia Ayala

Th Angry Birds Movie starring Jason Sudeikis, Josh Gad & Danny McBride
Columbia Pictures

Find out why the birds are so angry. When an island populated by happy, flightless birds is visited by mysterious green piggies, it’s up to three unlikely outcasts – Red, Chuck and Bomb – to figure out what the pigs are up to.

—IMDB

Okay, let’s be honest here: no one expects Angry Birds to be good, after all, it’s based off a game where you throw birds into pigs because they are stealing eggs. But guess what, this movie was actually incredibly entertaining, and much like with Warcraft, the writers were able to put together a strong story and strong characters based on a mobile game that had very little of both.
