A Remarkable Piece of History | Review of ‘Hidden Figures’

By Cynthia Ayala

Hidden Figures starring Taraji P. Henson, Octavia Spencer & Janelle Monáe

“Based on a true story. A team of African-American women provide NASA with important mathematical data needed to launch the program’s first successful space missions.”

  • IMDB

Such a remarkable film that brings to life the history not only about NASA and the space race but also about three amazing women who were instrumental in the space race and the war on racism.

Taraji P. Henson plays Katherine Goble, African-American physicist and mathematician in the aeronautics space program. She plays this incredible woman who had to face not only racism but sexism in the space department as she fights to prove her worth to the program and that her smarts go beyond her gender and race. It was a remarkable performance that is important for the present because it is a film that fights and pushes against those boundaries.

“From the largest elephant to the smallest shrew, the city of Zootopia is a mammal metropolis where various animals live and thrive. When Judy Hopps becomes the first rabbit to join the police force, she quickly learns how tough it is to enforce the law. Determined to prove herself, Judy jumps at the opportunity to solve a mysterious case. Unfortunately, that means working with Nick Wilde, a wily fox who makes her job even harder.”

This is a great family film that everyone needs to watch because of all the teaching moments within the film. Let me phrase that: the entire movie is a teaching moment. Zootopia is a film that is all about inclusion, about putting away the stereotypes and prejudices aside to live in a better society and how negative they are, how much they blind someone to see something but hatred and anger.

‘Insurgent’ Delivers an Amazing Sequel | Review of ‘The Divergent Series: Insurgent’

By: Cynthia Ayala

‘Insurgent’ starring Shailene Woodley & Theo James
Summit Entertainment

Insurgent stars Shailene Woodley as Tris Prior, the Divergent protagonist who is on the run from the power hungry Erudites lead by the ruthless Jeanine (played by Kate Winslet). Alongside Four (played by Theo James), her friend and love, the two search for allies in the unlikeliest places of all in the futuristic ruins of Chicago. Together, they must find what Tris’s mother gave her life to hide, what Jeanine want’s so badly, the secret of the past that may be the key – or destruction – of the future.

Incredibly fast paced, this film delivers a punch and evaluates what it means to be a part of something, a community. Separated into factions – Dauntless, Candor, Erudites, Abnegation, and Amity – society has put up walls to differentiate themselves. However, those who fit more than one faction are Divergent, a quality that puts everyone, especially Tris, in terrible danger. The film goes beyond the first to evaluate who these characters are and where they come from. A fast-paced film jumps from scene to scene as it follows these characters who are being hunted down by Jeanine who discovers that soon; she needs the daughter of the woman she killed, she needs Tris. Talk about the irony. Kate Winslet plays the villainous so spectacularly.
