Like the last bit of news we heard on Dan Aykroyd’s long promised—or long threatened, depending on how you look at it—Ghostbusters III, the latest update comes not from a trusted industry trade, but from a local news team. WIVB4 of New York snagged a few moments with Aykroyd as he signed bottles at a liquor store in Amherst, promoting his Crystal Head Vodka. As children in homemade Ghostbusters gear—complete with DIY proton packs—bustled about, a reporter asked Aykroyd how Ghostbusters III was coming along, to which he replied:

“We’ve got a new writing staff working on it now. It’s got to be prefect. That’s the whole thing. There’s no point in doing it unless it’s perfect. So that’s what we’re up to now.”

It’s troubling that a “staff” of writers have been applied to the project, as more than two writers on a screenplay is often a warning sign of a mess of script, burdened with a staggering amount of loose ends and half-baked ideas. The most inspiring part of this video is seeing that kids today still harbor a love of the first two Ghostbusters movies. But as much as I loved them, I can’t rally any enthusiasm for Aykroyd’s proposed sequel.

Besides his struggles to craft a worthwhile script, Aykroyd at 60 is the youngest of the original Ghostbusters team. No part of me wants to see aged Ray, Venkman, Ego and Winston battling ghosts while worrying about bum hips. I genuinely worry that Aykroyd’s attempt to reclaim the fame of his youth will spoil Ghostbusters films for many, tainting it with a mediocre cash grab finale. I mean, did the critically scorned box office bomb Blues Brothers 2000 help or hurt the Blues Brothers‘ legacy?
