What on earth is Michael Bay bringing our way this summer? For the last five years that answer has been pretty predictable, as Bay churned out three Transformers movies that got louder and more obnoxious as they went along (OK, the third one was better than the second, but not by much). But this summer he’s changing things up with Pain & Gain, his first buddy comedy and a chance to see The Rock and Mark Wahlberg play the juiced-up meatheads you know they were born to play.

Bay is still a ways off from the publicity rounds for Pain & Gain, but he wound up on the phone with Forbes because of his involvement in the Doritos Super Bowl ad contest. He also, of course, talked a little bit aboutPain & Gain— ” think you’ll be surprised by The Rock’s performance”– and then Transformers 4, which he’s already in the process of planning. Though the film won’t strictly be a reboot, Bay is already promising a lot of big changes:

We’re going to start off smaller. There’s a brand new cast. To freshen the franchise we’ve redesigned everything from top to bottom. The history of the first three movies is still there, we start four years later and there’s a reason why we’re meeting a new cast.

That brand new cast already includes Mark Wahlberg and Jack Reynor, thenewcomer whom Bay handpicked to be the youthful lead of the new film. Bay has also suggested that they’re embarking on a new trilogy with this new film, but of course, no one’s going to make any promises about that until we see how the new one does. Right now Transformers 4 is set for release in June 2014, which means Bay had better get started on this whole “redesigning everything top to bottom” thing. Pain and Gain, meanwhile, is coming April 26.
