Is Morris Chestnut Getting Ready To Play Marvel’s Black Panther?

By:  Eric Eisenberg

black_panther_36833While most of Marvel Studio‘s Phase Two plans involve sequels – namely Iron Man 3Thor: The Dark World, and Captain America: The Winter Soldier – it already looks as though Phase Three will be a time dedicated to introducing some new superheroes to the world. After years of waiting it’s been confirmed that Edgar Wright‘s Ant-Man will finally be arriving on November 6, 2015 and studio president Kevin Feige has confirmed that Doctor Strange will finally make his debut as well, but what other superheroes could be ready to hit the silver screen?

Well, Black Panther certainly seems like a solid candidate. We’ve been hearing talks about a movie based around the Wakandan king for years now, and while Feige has long played up the possibility nothing has ever been made official. Now, however, it seems as though a potential star may have just spilled the beans. Spotted by Latino-Review, actor Morris Chestnut recently left a post on his official Facebook page featuring the cover art seen below and the message “It’s time to get familiar with the Black Panther character!”

It’s a very vague post, but one filled with possibilities. Is it a part that he is simply interested in playing? Has Marvel actually approached him about the character? Could screen-testing already be underway? If either of the last two are the case, does that mean the studio is actively moving forward with their plans for a Black Panther movie?

For those unfamiliar with the character, Black Panther is the ceremonial name of T’Challa, the king of the fictional African nation Wakanda and leader of the Panther Tribe. The character is best known for both his great intelligence as well as incredible physical prowess, and wears a costume made entirely out of vibranium, the same material used to create Captain America’s shield. He fights using claws made from the same material, which have the ability to cut through anything.

Chestnut actually has some very recent comic book movie experience, playing Sergeant Marcus Williams in the upcoming Kick-Ass 2, so perhaps he’s just been bitten by the bug. Hopefully we’ll here some official news soon.
