Stephen Colbert has an uncanny ability to get people to believe in almost anything he says, even when everything he says is blatantly untrue. He’s spent 7 years playing a character who is a fire-breathing Republican (which Colbert is not), raising real money for a real Super PAC hosted by that fictional character, and conducting interviews on his show in character as a bully, while meeting with his guests beforehand to smile and assure them it’s all pretend.
So when Stephen Colbert is teasing us, is it remotely possible to know what’s real? Probably not. So you can choose whether or not to put some hope in the news bit at Empire, where they spotted a Colbert interview in Playboy in which he talked about his visit to the set of Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit last year, given that “Jackson knows I’m a big fan of the films.” But here’s the bit, as written by Empire, that intrigues us:
As any good journalist would, the interviewer wonders whether there isn’t more to this than meets the eye. Could, for instance, Colbert be cameoing in the movie? “Could be,” replies the comedian enigmatically.
If Stephen Colbert is indeed making a cameo in The Hobbit, we may not know until 2014, since the film is being split into three parts and the final installment, The Hobbit: There And Back Again doesn’t come out until July 18, 2014. And he’ll probably be hard to spot regardless, dressed up as an elf or a dwarf or hobbit, inevitably with a bunch of facial hair making his TV-perfect coif. Most likely of all? Colbert is teasing us, and he’s made no such cameo– though who knows what the character might insist on the show in the coming years.
Let us know in the comments if you’ve decided to hope that Colbert will indeed pop up in The Hobbit, and have your eyes peeled for him when An Unexpected Journey kicks off the trilogy on December 14.
