The Vampire Diaries’ Phoebe Tonkin on Hayley’s Baby: It’s Not a Joke

Our jaws still ache, they were dropped for so long after the big reveal on The Originals. The Vampire Diaries Phoebe Tonkin (Hayley) tells Zap2It that everyone on the show feels the same way.

In Season 4, Episode 20, “The Originals,” the New Orleans witches told Klaus (Joseph Morgan) that he’s about to be a daddy. His one-night stand with Hayley (Phoebe Tonkin) definitely came with strings attached. Somehow, the hybrid and the werewolf managed to procreate.

“I’m reading the reactions on Twitter now, and I think I pretty much felt the same as everyone watching it,” Phoebe says. “I was like, ‘What!?’ — just screaming. Honestly, I think it’s a really cool twist. It’s something I don’t think people were expecting. People are tweeting me, and they think it’s a joke. It’s not a joke.”

She also doesn’t see this being a romantic jumping-off point for the couple. “They definitely didn’t see any kind of future together when they slept together,” Phoebe says. “It was very much a liquor-fueled one-night-stand, as Klaus very blatantly pointed out in the episode — such a douchebag. I think that Hayley is feeling alone right now, but hopefully she’ll have Uncle Elijah and Auntie Rebekah around to help out.”

Elijah (Daniel Gillies) and Rebekah (Claire Holt) definitely seem slightly more capable of handling baby duty than Klaus. We picture wacky, sitcom hijinks the first time Elijah has to change a dirty diaper. He might want to invest in some grubbier clothes.
