Divergent Comic-Con Plans Revealed

By: Sean O’Connell

image There are multiple movies that we know are going to be in San Diego for Comic-Con 2013 – films like The Amazing Spider-Man 2 , The Hunger Games: Catching Fire or a full slate of Marvel projects. And then there are the titles that were assumed to be in attendance, but were waiting on confirmation. Today, Divergent moves from the “Maybe” column to the “See You There” column.

Summit Entertainment announced details for Divergent at Comic-Con, including a Hall H panel on Thursday, July 18, that will include (according to a press release) our first look at footage from the film, followed by a Q-and-A with a celebrity panel that will include novelist Veronica Roth, director Neil Burger, and cast members Shailene Woodley, Theo James,Miles Teller, Maggie Q, Ansel Elgort, Mekhi Phifer, Ben Lamb, Ben Lloyd-Hughes and Christian Madsen.

Wait, you don’t know what Divergent is yet? Fair enough. The film’s an adaptation of Roth’s YA novel – the first in a series of three books – that takes place in a dystopian future where society is divided up into distinct factions based on their personalities. Woodley plays our hero, Tris, who is a member of the Divergents – or, people who don’t fit neatlyinto one category or the other and could qualify for multiple rankings. Some believe this makes Divergents dangerous, so when Tris unearths a plan to eliminate all Divergents, shechooses to fight back.

If the plot has shades of The Hunger Games … well, Summit clearly is hoping that Woodley andDivergent strike a similar chord to what Jennifer Lawrence and Games struck with audiences last year. It’s interesting to see Games and Divergent squaring off at this year’s Comic-Con, where one now is a proven commodity and the other still is trying to convert a newaudience.

San Diego is the place to do it. A splashy Comic-Con presentation can win an upcoming movie oodles of valuable press. And so Summit – which is getting comfortable with Comic-Con campaigns – has an additional activity planned for Comic-Con attendees. I’ll block it out, in case you aren’t able to access the Hall H panel. Look for:

Convention Floor Booth – Summit Entertainment’s booth located within the Grand Hall will highlight DIVERGENT. Exclusive premium promotional items will be distributed to the attendees walking the convention floor and cast members will sign autographs for booth visitors.

Because studios heading to Comic-Con tend to protect their footage until it screens in Hall H (or beyond), I’d be very surprised if we saw any Divergent clips online until after this year’s event. If Summit were smart, though, they would release whatever Divergent footage they chose to show right after the Hall H presentation. Strike while the iron is hot. Because up until this point, we’ve only seen Divergent photos … and while they are cool to peruse, we want to be talking about footage from Burger’s adaptation. We’ll bring you as much Divergent news as you can handle during Comic Con week. For now, tell us what you want to know, and we’ll try to track the answers down for you.
