A sweet, wholesome regency-inspired fantasy, A Fragile Enchantment is perfect for fans of Bridgerton, slipping in gossip rags amidst romance and fantasy.
A Fragile Enchantment is an enchanting novel that follows Niamh as she weaves magic into threads while contending with her chronic illness and the way Prince Kit makes her heart swoon.
Storytelling
I think Iโve said this before, Iโm not one for romance, and A Fragile Enchantment is not a book I would typically pick up. Iโve never read or watched Bridgerton (although Iโm tempted just because of Charlotte), so that didnโt appeal to me.
However, as this was the Barnes and Noble YA book club pick, and I am the host of said book club at my local B&N, I didnโt have a choice. So I picked it up, and wouldnโt you know it, I absolutely adored it!
The story follows Niamh, a magical dressmaker commissioned to make the clothes for the royal wedding. But her magic has a cost. The more she uses it, the closer she is to death. Her magic allows her to stitch emotions and memories into the fabric, making them shine and stand out, which is why she was commissioned. However, the last thing Prince Kit wants is to get married to Princess Rosa for the betterment of the country.
Through all their dress fittings, Niamh and Kit form an unlikely friendship that begins to blossom into more. Of course, embroils Niamh in the local gossip column that seeks her help privately in exposing the royalsโ secrets.
For a story that doesnโt seem fast-paced, it sure moves as one without diminishing the characterization and the character dynamics. It moves effortlessly, telling the story of a royal with baggage, about a country still recovering from a civil war, about a girl who sees herself on deathโs doorstep. And it tells the story beautifully.
Enchanting Characters
And, as I mentioned, Saft does not ignore the fantastic characterization. Niamh appears to be a mousey initially, but the reader sees that there is more to her than meets the eye as the story goes on. She has a fire in her, as well as a fear. Niamh doesnโt want to let herself live or see the point in it. All Niamh wants to do is make sure that her family is provided for upon her death, even if that means, literally, working herself to death.
But meeting Kit, Sinclair, and Rosa changed that. They open her world and allow her to form the connections she needs and deserves.
As for Kit, he has so much pent-up anger and rage at the world, wearing armor to protect his heart. But Niamh sees the cracks and slowly forms a friendship that blossoms into romance. She allows him to raise his voice. She allows him to feel what he should feel in the unfairness of it all. Niamh validates his feelings and recognizes his pain. And this allows him to heal, to be heard.
Now, what also makes the novel shine is the devotion to the side characters. I loved this novelโs side characters and how Rosa and Sinclair jump off the pages and bring the story to life. Rosa is fierce, definitely reminiscent of Queen Catherine or Queen Isabelle of Spain, in her ferocity, and I loved that about her. She has willpower, her love of her country, and her love of herself, so she stands up and says, โI donโt need a king to rule my country.โ I absolutely loved how she balanced Niamh and found her voice by encouraging Niamh to have her own.
Final Thoughts
A Fragile Enchantment was a little out of my comfort zone, but Iโm glad I was pushed out of my comfort zone. This was a wholesome story about living, finding your voice, and being yourself. It was beautiful, wholesome, and simply enchanting.
