Salvación by Sandra Proudman | A Fierce Feminist Zorro Retelling You Need to Read

Salvación by Sandra Proudman is a fierce, feminist reimagining of Zorro that blends Mexican culture, family drama, and swashbuckling adventure into a powerful YA tale.

Sandra Proudman’s Salvación is a fierce, feminist twist on the Zorro legend—an empowering, unapologetically Mexican story that blends swashbuckling adventure, cultural authenticity, and a heroine who refuses to be silenced. With its fast pace, layered themes, and vibrant voice, this book begs to be adapted into a telenovela.

A Heroine Worth Rooting For

Lola is the kind of protagonist who leaps off the page. By day, she’s a dutiful daughter navigating her family’s strict expectations; by night, she becomes Salvación, the masked vigilante defending her people. Her dual identity is thrilling, but it’s her emotional depth—especially her complicated, painfully real relationship with her mother—that makes her unforgettable. Proudman nails the nuances of generational conflict, cultural expectations, and the quiet resilience of women who dare to want more.

Culture, Magic, and History Intertwined

This novel is steeped in Mexican culture, from its family dynamics to its effortless use of Spanish and its thoughtful exploration of colonialism. Proudman doesn’t shy away from difficult truths—acknowledging both European colonization and Mexico’s role in displacing Indigenous people—while tying these themes into the story’s magical system of sal negra and sal roja. It’s rich, evocative, and gives the book a unique heartbeat.

Where It Could Have Gone Further

As much as I loved Salvación, I found myself wanting more:

More Vigilante Action: Lola’s masked alter ego is electrifying, but her page time felt too short.

More Romance: The chemistry between Lola and Alejandro simmers, but the slow burn never fully ignites.

More Villain Depth: Hernández is a strong antagonist, yet his history with Alejandro hinted at layers that never fully surfaced.

These aren’t flaws so much as opportunities—the kind of story threads that make you wish the book had been just a little longer, or expanded into a series.

Final Thoughts

Salvación is bold, heartfelt, and unapologetically Mexican. It celebrates culture, critiques tradition, and gives us a heroine who fights not just with a blade, but with her heart. Even with its few missed opportunities, this story is brimming with potential and power. Fans of feminist retellings, masked vigilantes, and YA fantasy with teeth will devour this one.

Rating: 4 out of 5.
