After waiting two years for the sequel to Unseelie, I had started to wonder whether this book was ever going to happen. Thankfully, Unending finally arrived—and it was absolutely worth the wait.
Ivelisse Housman returns to the magical world of Seelie and Isolde with a sequel that feels noticeably different from the first book while still preserving everything that made the original story special. The expanded perspective, deeper characterization, mystical worldbuilding, and enduring bond between the twin sisters make this a deeply satisfying conclusion to the duology.
Returning to the World of Unseelie
The first novel introduced us to twin sisters Seelie and Isolde. Seelie has spent much of her life believing she is a changeling, while Isolde has remained her fiercely protective sister and constant companion.
By the end of Unseelie, the sisters had fought a dragon, discovered unexpected truths about Seelie’s origins, and accidentally awakened a powerful evil. Their mother’s decision to claim both daughters as her own—regardless of their origins—also remained one of the most touching revelations in the story.
Considering how long it had been since I read the first book, I was initially worried that I wouldn’t remember enough to follow the sequel. Fortunately, Unending does an excellent job of helping readers reorient themselves.
Important events and character relationships are woven naturally into the narrative without overwhelming the reader with an unnecessary information dump. I quickly remembered who everyone was, what had happened, and where the story needed to go next.
A Dual-Perspective Story
One of the most significant changes in Unending is the use of dual perspectives.
This time, we don’t only experience the story through Seelie. We also get chapters from Isolde’s point of view, giving her the opportunity to emerge as a fully developed protagonist rather than simply existing as Seelie’s sister.
This was easily one of my favorite additions to the sequel.
Isolde is a gifted thief who can pick nearly any lock and disappear when she doesn’t want to be seen. She is practical, resourceful, and incredibly loyal, making her an excellent contrast to her more magically powerful sister.
Her perspective allows readers to understand her motivations, insecurities, and fierce devotion to Seelie on a much deeper level. She has never made Seelie feel ashamed of her magic, her differences, or her uncertain origins. Even when she criticizes her sister’s choices, it comes from a place of love.
Her attitude is less, “Why would you do something so reckless?” and more, “Why would you do something reckless without me?”
That dynamic captures their relationship perfectly.
A Powerful Story of Sisterhood
The bond between Seelie and Isolde remains the emotional heart of the duology.
Even when the sisters are separated and traveling through different faerie courts, their love for one another influences nearly every decision they make. They may have different strengths and personalities, but they function as a unit.
Isolde believes in Seelie even when Seelie struggles to believe in herself. She never treats her sister as a burden or makes her feel inferior because of her magic. Her loyalty is unwavering, even when Seelie’s decisions create dangerous and complicated consequences.
Their relationship feels authentic because it includes frustration, disagreements, humor, and unconditional support. They can chastise one another while still being willing to walk directly into danger together.
I loved their relationship in the first book, and Unending made me appreciate it even more.
Seelie’s Growing Confidence
Seelie undergoes some wonderful character development throughout the sequel.
In the first book, she was deeply uncertain about herself, her abilities, and her place in the world. She possessed tremendous magical power but lacked the confidence to fully embrace it.
In Unending, we see her becoming more assured—not only in her magic, but also in her identity.
Her growth doesn’t happen immediately or without setbacks. She is still trying to understand her origins while dealing with the consequences of awakening a dangerous presence that now shares her mind. She must determine how much control she has and whether she can trust herself with the power she possesses.
Watching her gradually become more confident was incredibly rewarding.
Seelie’s journey is also closely tied to self-love. She has spent so much time feeling different that she struggles to believe she deserves acceptance, affection, and happiness. Her story is not only about mastering magic or saving two realms. It is about accepting herself completely.
Romance, Magic, and Shapeshifting Birds
Seelie’s relationship with Raze adds another emotional layer to her journey.
Raze comes from a magical family and possesses the ability to shapeshift, although he can only transform into different kinds of birds. Honestly, that limitation makes his power even more charming.
His aunt, who raised him, has spent years making him feel inferior and treating him as though he were a disappointment. She is cruel, dismissive, and responsible for many of his insecurities.
Thankfully, she eventually receives exactly the kind of comeuppance she deserves—and the way it happens is both satisfying and appropriately comical.
Although Raze had more of a flirtatious, playboy personality in the first novel, his feelings for Seelie are genuine. He cares deeply about her, even when she struggles to accept that affection.
Seelie doesn’t always believe she is worthy of his love. That insecurity becomes another part of her ongoing journey toward accepting herself. Watching her realize that she is deserving of love, exactly as she is, gives their relationship far more emotional meaning than a simple fantasy romance.
Exploring the Faerie Courts
The sequel expands the world by exploring both the Seelie and Unseelie Courts.
The characters separate as they attempt to reunite the faerie kingdoms and save the human realm from the evil awakened at the end of the first book. Dividing the group allows the story to develop both courts while giving individual characters more opportunities to shine.
The faerie world feels strange, dangerous, and appropriately mystical. Court politics, hidden motives, powerful magic, and uncertain alliances create constant obstacles for the characters.
I especially appreciated how the expanded worldbuilding never overshadowed the relationships at the center of the story. The courts and their conflicts are important, but they ultimately serve the emotional journeys of Seelie, Isolde, Raze, and their companions.
Humor, Heartbreak, and a Baby Dragon
Despite the growing danger, Unending maintains a wonderful balance between humor and heavier emotional moments.
There are scenes that are genuinely funny, particularly when the characters’ personalities clash or their carefully constructed plans go completely wrong. Those lighter moments prevent the story from becoming overwhelmed by its darker conflicts.
At the same time, the novel includes several heartbreaking and sorrowful scenes that reinforce just how much these characters have to lose.
And, of course, there is a baby dragon.
The baby dragon is absolutely adorable and deserves every bit of attention it receives.
Strong Pacing and Satisfying Development
The pacing kept me engaged throughout the novel.
Because the characters separate and explore different parts of the faerie world, the narrative always feels as though it is moving forward. Each perspective contributes to the larger conflict while developing its central character.
The plot also addresses the complicated ending of Unseelie without feeling rushed. The first book left behind numerous magical consequences, unanswered questions, and dangerous threats. Housman carefully weaves those separate threads together into a cohesive conclusion.
The result is a story that feels mystical and expansive while remaining emotionally grounded.
Worth the Wait
Waiting two years for a sequel can be frustrating, especially when the first novel ends with so many unresolved questions. However, I would rather wait for a thoughtful and well-executed book than receive something rushed before it is ready.
Unending proves that some stories are worth waiting for.
The sequel didn’t disappoint me. It expanded the world, strengthened the characters, and gave Isolde the narrative attention she deserved. Most importantly, it maintained the warmth, humor, and powerful sisterly bond that made me love Unseelie in the first place.
Final Thoughts
Unending is a satisfying and emotionally resonant conclusion to Ivelisse Housman’s Unseelie duology.
The addition of Isolde’s perspective strengthens the story, allowing readers to understand both sisters as complex individuals while preserving their beautiful relationship. Seelie’s growing confidence, Isolde’s fierce loyalty, the expanding faerie world, and the heartfelt romances all contribute to a sequel that feels richer and more developed than its predecessor.
The story is funny, magical, occasionally heartbreaking, and filled with characters I genuinely care about. After waiting so long to return to this world, I’m happy to say that the journey was worth it.
