Ubisoft and Sony have unveiled Assassin’s Creed III: Liberation for the PlayStation Vita. Not only is it an extension of Assassin’s Creed III’s narrative, it also features the franchise’s very first lead female assassin.

Covering the Louisiana Rebellion of 1768, players step into the shoes of Aveline De Grandpré, a lady of French and African descent, and “a woman of conviction…fighting for freedom in 18th century New Orleans.”

Liberation will feature controls tailored to the PS Vita, although details were scarce. There is a multiplayer mode as well, and linking Liberation up with Assassin’s Creed III on consoles will unlock several goodies, including Connor’s tomahawk, a new character skin, a multiplayer character and upgrades to ammunition pouches.

“The release of Assassin’s Creed III Liberation will be the series’ most ambitious handheld offering to date,” announced Ubisoft’s Geoffroy Sardin.

“Combining the console-like experience with features exclusive to PS Vita system, Assassin’s Creed III Liberation will be a leading example of what gamers should expect from a handheld experience,” added Tony Key, US Senior VP of Sales and Marking at Ubisoft.

The footage looks good, to say the least, and is definitely a step up from the miserable experience that was Assassin’s Creed Bloodlines for the PSP.

Assassin’s Creed III: Liberation releases on the same day as Assassin’s Creed III: October 30, 2012.
