Published by Katherine Tegen Books, Bone Crier’s Moon by Kathryn Purdie is the first in new YA fantasy series.

Interesting novel. Bone Crier’s Moon is a swift read because it has such a strong opening and then leaps forward to something drastically different. The novel splits between three characters — Bastien, Ailesse, and Sabine — all of whom have distinct personalities. Each voice is so different, and they develop differently as well. Even more impressive, there is no love triangle whatsoever. These three characters develop together and on their own, through their circumstances. These characters each become more different than who they were. They all bring a perfect balance to the storytelling, giving more dimension to the world within the novel.

These three characters are also incredibly relatable. They all have their little flaws, but their drive, their passion, their narratives, and how they flow and grow to make them all relatable. Ailesse is continuously trying to prove herself to her mother, Bastien is seeking revenge for the death of his father, and Sabine, she is the most gentle character who is continuously trying to prove herself to everyone, except her best friend. As their dynamics grow through the plot twists of the novel, they each learn something about themselves that the reader can again grasp onto.

The world-building is also something Purdie did very well. There is much magic here, and some parts are cruel, magic comes with a price, and the price for guiding souls to the afterlife is giving up one’s true love. Purdie thought out the mythology and magic behind the Bone Crier’s. It not only feels fresh, but it is interesting. Purdie structures her world carefully and uses detail to lure the reader into this world she has masterfully constructed.

Final Thoughts

Purdie also makes this novel enjoyable by making it unpredictable. The twists and turns the novel takes, take the reader by surprise. Furthermore, coupled with the fantastic pacing, this novel is a quick addicting read. There are so many complex emotions between the characters that influence the high stakes tension of the novel, and it grips the reader even more.

Bone Crier’s Moon is an incredible new start to a fresh, unique, compelling new series. (✮✮✮✮✰)
