Not for the Faint of Heart Review: A Queer Robin Hood–Inspired Adventure with Heart and Humor

A queer Robin Hood–inspired adventure, Not for the Faint of Heart blends humor, sapphic romance, and themes of legacy and leadership into a fresh take on a classic legend.

Retellings often breathe new life into familiar legends, and Not for the Faint of Heart by Lex Croucher does exactly that. While the novel isn’t a direct retelling of the classic Robin Hood story, it plays with the mythology in clever and refreshing ways. Blending sapphic romance, sharp humor, and thoughtf

A Robin Hood Legacy with Complications

The story follows Mariel, the granddaughter of the legendary Robin Hood. But the Merry Men she’s inherited are very different from the heroic band of outlaws that once stole from the rich and helped the poor.

Under the leadership of Mariel’s father, Jack, the Merry Men have become harsher, more aggressive, and far less “merry.” The group has started to resemble the very forces they once fought against. Mariel constantly tries to prove herself worthy of leading them someday, but her father has little faith in her abilities, leaving her trapped in a cycle of self-doubt.

Her attempt to prove herself takes a strange turn when she accidentally kidnaps Clem, a traveling healer who believes in helping anyone who comes to her door—whether they are Merry Men or the Sheriff of Nottingham’s soldiers.

That unexpected meeting sets the entire story in motion.

A Sapphic Romance Full of Banter

At the heart of the novel is the dynamic between Mariel and Clem. Their personalities couldn’t be more different. Clem is a cheerful do-gooder who believes strongly in compassion and healing, while Mariel is stubborn, defensive, and determined to prove herself.

This creates a classic grumpy-sunshine dynamic that fuels much of the book’s humor. Their banter is sharp and entertaining, especially as Clem refuses to be intimidated by Mariel’s attempts to keep emotional distance.

But their relationship grows beyond simple banter. Over time, they begin challenging each other’s worldviews. Clem pushes Mariel to reconsider the violent direction the Merry Men have taken, while Mariel helps Clem confront the harsh realities of a world where healing alone may not always be enough.

Their growth feels mutual, which makes the romance feel genuine and earned.

Legacy, Leadership, and Community

One of the most interesting themes in the novel is the idea of legacy.

Mariel struggles with the weight of being Robin Hood’s descendant while watching the Merry Men drift away from the ideals her grandfather once stood for. The people they claim to protect no longer trust them, and Clem becomes one of the first characters to openly challenge that reality.

Rather than simply accepting the world as it is, Clem acts as a bridge between opposing sides. She pushes Mariel to consider what kind of leader she truly wants to be and whether the Merry Men can return to their original purpose.

Through this conflict, the story explores how legends evolve—and how new generations must decide what parts of the past are worth preserving.

Pacing and Story Structure

The novel does take some time to build momentum. The first half of the book occasionally slows down due to longer scenes and heavy backstory. These moments sometimes disrupt the pacing, especially during scenes that feel stretched longer than necessary.

Final Thoughts

Not for the Faint of Heart is a thoughtful and entertaining spin on Robin Hood lore that combines humor, romance, and character growth. While the pacing occasionally slows early on, the strong character dynamics and engaging themes about legacy and leadership ultimately make the story worthwhile. Readers who enjoy queer retellings, grumpy-sunshine romances, and stories about reclaiming old legends will likely find plenty to enjoy here.
