Beast Becomes Her is a gripping YA fantasy that combines Norse mythology, a chilling murder mystery, and powerful themes of trauma, healing, and self-discovery.
After enjoying Crystal Seitz’s debut novel, Inheritance of Scars, I was excited to see what she would do next. I’m happy to report that Beast Becomes Her exceeded my expectations in nearly every way.
This dark YA fantasy combines Norse mythology, supernatural mysteries, and a haunting boarding school setting with a deeply emotional story about trauma, abuse, and healing. While the murder mystery and magical elements are compelling, it is ultimately the character growth that makes this novel shine.
A Heroine Burdened by Trauma
At the center of the story is Edith, a teenager carrying more emotional weight than anyone her age should have to bear.
After witnessing her father murder her mother before taking his own life, Edith has spent years trying to become perfect. Living in foster care alongside her younger sister, she believes that one mistake could cost them the chance at a permanent home. As a result, she suppresses every emotion, every fear, and every piece of herself that might be considered flawed.
That fragile control shatters when a boy touches her without consent and claws suddenly emerge from her hands. In an instant, her carefully constructed life falls apart, and she learns that she is a Berserker—a shapeshifter capable of transforming into a powerful beast.
What follows is a journey that is as emotional as it is magical.
Norse Mythology Meets Murder Mystery
After discovering her true nature, Edith is sent to Skadrim, a school for supernatural beings steeped in Norse mythology.
The worldbuilding was one of my favorite aspects of the novel. Berserkers, witches, hunters, seers, and practitioners of seiðr magic all coexist within this hidden world. The mythology feels woven naturally into the story rather than simply existing as background decoration.
Things become even more interesting when someone is brutally murdered shortly after Edith arrives.
And when I say brutally, I mean brutally.
The violence caught me off guard in the best way possible. It immediately established the stakes and transformed what could have been a typical magical school story into something much darker and more suspenseful.
As the body count rises, Edith finds herself investigating a mystery tied to a tragedy that occurred thirty years earlier—one connected to the abandoned Seer school that now sits haunted and forgotten.
The atmosphere is fantastic. Imagine Wednesday’s Nevermore Academy infused with Norse mythology, ghosts, and a serial killer.
Character Growth Done Right
The strongest aspect of the novel is unquestionably Edith’s character arc.
Her greatest fear isn’t the murderer stalking the school. It’s becoming her father.
She is terrified that the darkness she witnessed as a child exists inside her as well. Throughout the novel, she struggles to separate herself from the man who destroyed her family while learning that acknowledging her emotions is not the same thing as losing control of them.
Watching Edith slowly unpack years of trauma and self-loathing was incredibly rewarding. Her journey toward self-acceptance feels authentic, emotional, and earned.
This is the kind of character growth I love seeing in fantasy novels.
Abuse, Healing, and Breaking Cycles
One of the things I appreciated most about Beast Becomes Her is how thoughtfully it explores different forms of abuse.
Edith’s trauma stems from witnessing physical, emotional, and psychological abuse within her family. Meanwhile, Amon—the novel’s primary love interest—is dealing with a different form of abuse altogether.
His father is a celebrated hunter, but behind that reputation is a deeply manipulative and controlling man whose treatment of his family has left lasting scars. Through both Edith and Amon, the novel explores how abuse can take many forms and how survivors often struggle to recognize unhealthy behaviors when they’ve spent their lives normalizing them.
Rather than treating these themes superficially, the story dives into the emotional consequences of trauma and the difficult process of healing.
It’s one of the reasons the book feels so emotionally impactful.
A Slow-Burn Romance That Works
The romance between Edith and Amon develops naturally throughout the story.
Amon initially suspects Edith of being the killer and spends much of the novel watching her closely. Unfortunately for him, the more he observes, the more obvious it becomes that she’s innocent.
Their relationship evolves from suspicion to friendship and eventually into romance, but it never feels rushed. They become friends first, learning to trust one another while working together to solve the murders threatening their school.
The slow-burn progression gives their relationship genuine emotional weight and allows both characters to grow individually before becoming a couple.
A Predictable Villain, but an Effective One
I will admit that I guessed the identity of the main antagonist before the official reveal.
However, that predictability never hurt my enjoyment of the story.
The villain’s motivations tie directly into the novel’s larger themes surrounding power, control, and abuse. Even if I saw the reveal coming, the execution remained satisfying because it reinforced everything the story had been building toward emotionally.
Sometimes it’s less important whether a twist surprises you and more important whether it works for the story being told. In this case, it absolutely worked.
Final Thoughts
Beast Becomes Her is a fantastic sophomore novel that improves upon Crystal Seitz’s debut in nearly every way.
Between the compelling murder mystery, the richly atmospheric Norse mythology, the haunted-school setting, and the deeply emotional character work, this was a book I found difficult to put down.
Most importantly, the novel treats its themes of trauma, abuse, and healing with care and nuance. Edith’s journey from fear and self-loathing to self-acceptance is both powerful and rewarding, while the mystery keeps the pages turning from beginning to end.
Dark, thoughtful, suspenseful, and emotionally resonant, Beast Becomes Her is easily one of my favorite YA fantasy reads of the year.
If you’re willing to push through a somewhat challenging opening, you’ll find a unique dragon fantasy with an intriguing magic system, compelling relationships, and plenty of promise for the series ahead.
