Paul Feig had about as good a summer as you can get last year, when Bridesmaids opened in mid-May and basically steamrolled across the season, becoming not just one of the biggest hits of the year, but also one of the most-loved. Now the director and writer is sitting this summer out as he puts together his next project– maybe with Reese Witherspoon? maybe with Colin Firth?— but just because you won’t see him around this summer does’t mean his presence won’t be felt. OK, so you’ll have to look really hard to see his writing work in one of this summer’s movies, and you’ll probably never be able to notice it at all… so why don’t we just let Feig himself reveal the big secret.

Talking to Vulture on the red carpet at the Tribeca Film Festival, Feig revealed that because of his friendship with director Marc Webb, he didn’t just visit the set of The Amazing Spider-Man, but he contributed some words. “I did a little bit of writing for that movie, for one of the high school scenes, so I’m excited.” In the brief glimpse we got of at least one high school scene on the big Spider-Man preview day, there seemed to be a genuine awkwardness between Andrew Garfield as Peter Parker and Emma Stone as Gwen Stacy, and Webb seems to be going for some humor in those scenes, presumably to balance out the high drama that comes later.

And Feig, of course, is the perfect guy to provide that humor and awkwardness, thanks to his still-excellent work on the short-lived series Freaks and Geeks, which was so true to the growing pains of high school it was hard to watch sometimes. Knowing he’s involved in crafting that dynamic is just one more tiny little reason to look forward to The Amazing Spider-Man, which with its July 3 release date is maybe the quietest of the summer blockbusters right now. Maybe they can cook up some posters that claim it’s “from the director of Bridesmaids” and win that coveted comedy geek audience? OK, OK, maybe not.
