Review of ‘If These Wings Could Fly’

Amazing. If These Wings Could Fly brought to life the tough subject of domestic violence and the pain that comes from turning a blind eye to it. Rationalizing it and turning a blind eye makes everyone just as culpable as the one inflicting the pain and fear, and that is what McCauley is highlighting with this novel.

Strangely, it was also so beautiful to read. Leighton lives in fear as she tells this story progresses; she finds the strength within herself to stand up to her father. It is an empowering novel, that makes them open their eyes and stand up, not stay silent. That is what makes the novel beautiful, how it grows, how the crows and their wings they have can inspire them to free themselves.

The magical realism brought to life with the crows; it is incredible. It does not all happen all at once, but slowly, over time, making it even more magical. The crows and Leighton, influence each other making for a compelling and captivating story.

Final Thoughts

If These Wings Could Fly is an impressive story because it empowers, and it shows the reader one of the many forms of domestic violence. McCauley’s persuasive writing allows the pacing to capture the passage of time without dragging the story. There is a soft sort of energy that keeps the momentum up and keeps the reader interested in the powerful message.

Rating: 4.5 out of 5.
