Dungeon Crawler Carl by Matt Dinniman is a hilarious, heartfelt, and action-packed LitRPG adventure that combines dark humor, found family, and high-stakes survival into one unforgettable reading experience.
I owe my best friend Jeff a very public apology.
For months, he told me to read Dungeon Crawler Carl. For months, I ignored him. Then my Barnes & Noble book club picked it as our monthly read, which finally gave me the push I needed to move it way up my TBR.
And wow.
This book completely lived up to the hype.
I went into it expecting a fun LitRPG adventure. What I got was one of the most entertaining, heartfelt, and addictive books I’ve read in a very long time. Between the brilliant humor, the incredible character work, and the nonstop pacing, I absolutely devoured it.

Do Yourself a Favor and Get the Audiobook
Before I even get into the story itself, I need to talk about the audiobook.
It is phenomenal.
Seriously, if you’re considering reading Dungeon Crawler Carl, I highly recommend experiencing it through audiobook or immersive reading. The narration elevates an already fantastic story into something truly special.
The voice acting brings every joke, every emotional moment, and every ridiculous situation to life. Princess Donut alone is worth the price of admission. The narrator manages to make each character feel distinct and memorable, adding even more personality to an already colorful cast.
The book is great on its own.
The audiobook is an experience.
A Dungeon Crawl for the Fate of Humanity
The premise is absolutely bonkers in the best possible way.
Carl has just discovered that his girlfriend has been cheating on him. While dealing with that personal disaster, he finds himself outside in the middle of the night chasing after her beloved show cat, Princess Donut.
Then the world ends.
Alien forces arrive and transform Earth into the setting for an intergalactic reality television show. Humanity’s only chance at survival is to enter a massive dungeon filled with monsters, traps, quests, and deadly challenges.
The rules are simple: survive.
If someone can somehow make it all the way to the eighteenth floor, humanity may have a chance to reclaim Earth.
So Carl enters the dungeon.
With a cat.
Naturally.
Carl and Princess Donut Are Perfect
The heart of this story is the relationship between Carl and Princess Donut.
Carl insists he’s not a cat person, but anyone paying attention knows that’s a lie. The bond between them is one of the most entertaining aspects of the entire novel.
Their interactions are hilarious. Their arguments are hilarious. Their loyalty to one another is surprisingly moving.
Carl’s constant exasperation whenever Donut creates chaos became one of my favorite running jokes in the entire book.
Yet underneath all the humor is genuine affection. They care deeply about one another, and that emotional core gives the story far more weight than you might initially expect.
What starts as a ridiculous premise quickly becomes a genuinely touching found-family story.
More Than Just Laughs
As funny as the novel is, it also has surprising emotional depth.
The dungeon isn’t simply a game.
Real people are dying.
Many of the monsters and bosses Carl encounters were once human beings whose lives have been twisted and destroyed for the entertainment of a galactic audience.
The humor often serves as a coping mechanism for the horrors surrounding the characters. Beneath the jokes, there’s anger, grief, trauma, and a desperate determination to survive.
That balance between comedy and tragedy is one of the reasons the novel works so well.
It never loses sight of the stakes.
Fast-Paced and Impossible to Put Down
This book moves.
Every level introduces new challenges, new dangers, and new absurd situations. The pacing rarely lets up, constantly pushing the story forward while still finding time for character development and emotional moments.
I found myself looking for excuses to keep reading.
One more chapter.
One more scene.
One more dungeon level.
Before I knew it, I had flown through the entire book.
The progression system is addictive, the worldbuilding is creative, and the storytelling consistently keeps readers engaged.
Why It Works
At its core, Dungeon Crawler Carl succeeds because it understands exactly what it wants to be.
It’s funny without becoming silly.
It’s emotional without becoming melodramatic.
It’s action-packed without sacrificing character development.
It combines LitRPG mechanics, science fiction, fantasy, dark comedy, and found-family storytelling into something that feels entirely unique.
Even readers who don’t normally gravitate toward LitRPGs may find themselves hooked because the focus never drifts too far from the characters themselves.
Carl, Princess Donut, and the people they encounter are what make this story so memorable.
Final Thoughts
I finally understand the hype.
Dungeon Crawler Carl is one of those rare books that manages to be wildly entertaining while also delivering genuine emotional depth. The humor is outstanding, the pacing is relentless, the character dynamics are unforgettable, and the worldbuilding is endlessly creative.
Most importantly, it’s fun.
Pure, ridiculous, wonderfully chaotic fun.
Whether you’re a fan of LitRPGs, Dungeons & Dragons, science fiction, fantasy, or simply great character-driven storytelling, this is a book that deserves a spot on your shelf.
Jeff was right.
I should have read it sooner.
