No Return To Series Roots For Resident Evil 6, Says Capcom

There will be no return to roots for Capcom’s Resident Evil 6, according to Executive Producer Hiroyuki Kobayashi, who said that the game will build on the good points of Resident Evil 4 andResident Evil 5’s game design instead.

As seen in the debut trailer, Leon Kennedy and Chris Redfield are back in action with zombies that don’t quite behave like the conventional ones, running, jumping and even using weapons. A third character also joins the playing field, although Capcom have yet to name him. According to Kobayashi, this new character is said to behave more like a modern day, fallible hero.

On top of the smarter zombies, players will encounter a new type of enemy called the J’avo BOW.

“Named by the BSAA after the Serbian word for ‘demon’, the first J’avo made an appearance in the conflict zone of Eastern Europe about six months before the action of Resident Evil 6. The J’avo still exhibit certain human elements – such as the ability to understand speech, work together as a group and use weapons – but they are also incredibly aggressive and a number of their actions have regressed to pure instinct.

“When a J’avo takes damage it has the ability to regenerate itself. However if it is receives major damage then it will mutate that affected body part into a number of varied forms, meaning players will have to rethink their strategy and adapt to this unpredictability.”

It also sounds like Capcom are moving away from the stop and gun gameplay mechanics of RE4and RE5, instead choosing to adopt a more action-oriented system where players will be able to move, roll and shoot at the same time: “Resident Evil 6 features an evolved control system allowing players to shoot whilst moving; slide; roll in any direction and to take cover along with the addition of an enhanced melee attack.”

  1. Damn. I was just blogging about this last night, after saying to DH how I missed the old zombies from the original RE and the spooky atmosphere of the mansion. Great…stop and roll AND shoot. More button mashing for me to learn. *rolls eyes* I don’t see why they can’t incorporate a more spooky and ‘claustrophobic’ setting into it while still keeping dynamic game play. I mean, if we wanted to play a strictly action/shooting game, we could play call of duty or something like that.
