Halle Berry And Tom Hanks Get Futuristic In First Cloud Atlas Images

By: Katey Rich

Cloud Atlas, the massively ambitious adaptation of David Mitchell’s novel from the directing trio of Andy and Lana Wachowski and Tom Tykwer, is set to premiere at the Toronto Film Festival in September. And while it’s still kind of hard to wrap our minds around just how they’re adapting such a complex story, Entertainment Weekly has snagged our first images of some of the actors in costume, and yes, you can tell just by these two images that things are getting strange. Check them out below and head to EW to see the full-size versions.Halle_Berry_And_Tom_Hanks_Get_Futuristic_First_Cloud_Atlas_Images_1343232345Halle_Berry_And_Tom_Hanks_Get_Futuristic_First_Cloud_Atlas_Images_1343232355

As you might guess by the fact that the massive cast includes a lot of actors not featured here, these images come from just two of the six intertwined stories, which take place over the course of a millennium and range from science-fiction adventures to the old-fashioned tale of an American merchant traveling the South Pacific in the 1800s. The image of Tom Hanks and Halle Berry you see comes from the story set furthest in the future, where Hanks’s character is a man raised in a relatively primitive culture on the island that used to be Hawaii, and Berry plays one of the few remaining humans with knowledge from before the fall of civilization. The image of Jim Broadbent and Ben Whishaw, on the other hand, is from a story set in the 1920s, where Whishaw plays a young composer who becomes the apprentice of Broadbent’s older genius. Berry is said to be playing the wife of Broadbent’s character, who makes all three of their lives infinitely more complicated.

Yes, all of the actors in Cloud Atlas are playing multiple roles, so count on seeing all of the people here in different costumes eventually, along with fellow castmates Susan Sarandon, Hugo Weaving, Jim Sturgess, Hugh Grant and Keith David. In fact, EW says they’ll have “dozens” more images later today, so stay tuned!
