Earlier this year Gina Carano proved in Steven Soderbergh’s Haywire that she can kick just as much ass as any male action star and doing so has landed her a lead role in an upcoming project described as an all female version of The Expendables. The former MMA fighter, who will next be seen alongside Vin Diesel, Paul Walker and Dwayne Johnson in the next Fast and Furious movie, is the first actress to sign up for the project, which is being written by newcomer Dutch Southern.
The project is being produced by Adi Shankar through his 1984 Private Defense Contractors banner and he has told Variety that the project simply wouldn’t work unless he had Carano on board. “I don’t know how I’m supposed to make a movie that is supposed to be the female version of The Expendables without Gina Carano in it,” Shankar said. “It would be like making Twix without caramel or Jamba Juice without jamba.” In addition to producing, Shankar’s company will also be fully financing the project
The trade says that talks are still on-going with other actresses for parts in the movie, but no specific names are mentioned. Southern, who wrote the wrote the 2010 Black List script Hoof Harrington’s Greatest Hits, was hired to write the script for the film back in August when the project was announced.
This year alone has seen its fair share of ass kicking females, fromUnderworld and Resident Evil franchise leaders Kate Beckinsale and Milla Jovovich to The Hunger Games‘ Jennifer Lawrence. Obviously names like Angelina Jolie and Sigourney Weaver are also going to be considered, but who would you like to see join the ranks of the female Expendables?
