Does this bring back any fond memories of CW’s Smallville to anyone?  That show started out well enough but some of those years before the final season were, to say the least, utter crap.  But as the Blue Lantern that this writer is, I have hope that all will be well.

In any case, it looks as though Fox is bringing The Dark Knight to primetime television along with some of his classic archenemies.

The show will center on a 12-year old Bruce Wayne.  Chairman Kevin Reilly told critics at Fox’s winter press tour that along with a younger Bruce Wayne, younger versions of a villains such as The Joker, The Penguin, The Riddler and Catwoman will also have places in the show.  (Not a hard spin considering the villains’ month that DC Comics did coupled with the Zero Year story arc that spanned all Batman titles.)

“This is an origin story,” he declared, describing the show as “an operatic soap that has slightly larger-than-life quality to it” set in a “Gotham teetering on the edge”.

Although that statement sounds enticing, it has this fan a little worried.  Smallville and Arrow were/are successes because even though things got dark, there was a glimmer of hope at the end and the comedy was still there, even if in the slightest moment in the shows.  Just take a look at the 60’s Batman, it was serious, Adam West was serious, but he had a lighter air around him.  Granted times were different and the show was campy, but it still attracts fans far and wide. Comics are successful because they have humor as well as serious action, fan boys don’t really do “soaps”.  However, as long as the writing is as solid as ‘Arrow’, I don’t think we need to fear.

Be that as it may, Reilly did shed a little more light onto the show, saying that a young commissioner Gordon—then actually Detective Gordon—will also be in the show (because the show can’t honestly exist without him) and that the show will follow the dark tone set in the Christopher Nolan’s trilogy.

A “Gotham” pilot has been ordered, but no casting or filming as taken place yet.  The show isn’t even on Fox’s schedule yet but is currently slated for the 2014-15 season.

Oh, and Reilly did make one promise: the final episode will have Bruce putting on the cowl.  How can anyone resist that?
